Personal lubricants, also known as lube, are used during intercourse to reduce friction between body parts, or between body parts and other objects.

Most lubricants today fall into one of two categories: water-based and silicone-based. There are also oil-based lubricants but few of these are used, because oil breaks down latex condoms making them prone to breakage and ineffective.

All lubricants have advantages and disadvantages, although for most situations water-based lubricants are by far the most popular. Both water-based and silicone-based lubricants are safe to use with condoms, the main differences between these two lubricants are, water-based lubricants flush out of the body and off the body without soap and water and water-based are more widley available. Silicone lubricants tend to be more expensive although less is required.
