The first lingerie was both painful and practical and worn as general underclothing. The term derived from the old French word of linge, meaning linen, and originally introduced as a euphemism for scandalous underclothing! It wasn’t until the late 1850s that it was commonly used. Today lingerie is far removed from the basics and has more purpose than existing as an unexciting item of clothing.
